Thailand: An 1866-67 sketch by French expeditioner Louis Delaporte of a war elephant's howdah, or saddle, which he came across in the town of Oubon.
French expeditioner Garnier wrote: “In the grand square of Oubon, this remarkable sculptured wooden elephant saddle is preserved. On both sides of the cage there are two shields to protect the fighters and two quivers to hold the arrows and the lances. The back piece is richly sculpted with many roses and arabesques encrusted with small pieces of silvered and colored glass and precious stones.”
