China: An elaborate painting of Avalokitesvara from Mogao Caves, Dunhuang, 10th century

This painting of Avalokitesvara or Guanyin was donated to the Mogao Caves in 910 CE by a reverend nun named Yanhui 'on behalf of my elder sister and teacher and on the souls of my dead parents that they me born anew in Pure Land'. Yanhui stands on the right hand side of Avalokitesvara, her younger brother on the left.
