Thailand: A study of four Siamese women, engraving, c.1860

Four women of central Siam in the mid-19th century, when it was the custom for women to crop their hair short. In semi-autonomous north Thailand at the time - the former Lan Na or Lanna Kingdom with its capital at Chiang Mai - women wore their hair long.
