India: Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate), entrance to the Jama Masjid, Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh

Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate) is set into the south wall of the congregational mosque, the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque). This impressive gate is 54 metre high and was added in 1576-1577, five years after the completion of the mosque. The 'victory' commemorates Emperor Akbar's successful Gujarat campaign.

Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory) was built during the second half of the 16th century by the Emperor Akbar ((r. 1556-1605)). It was the capital of the Mughal Empire for 10 years.
