China: Five Rams Statue, Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province

The Five Rams Statue (Wu Yang Shixiang), a granite sculptural representation of five goats, is based on the legend of Guangzhou’s founding. Five gods descended from heaven riding rams holding sprigs of rice in their mouths. The celestial visitors distributed the rice, blessing the local people with eternal freedom from famine and then disappeared leaving the five rice-bearing rams. The rams turned to stone, giving Guangzhou its nickname: ‘City of Rams’.
