Malaysia: Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple, Malacca

Malaysia: Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple, Malacca

Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple, built in 1781, is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia and one of the oldest functioning Hindu temples in Maritime Southeast Asia.

In the 1780s the Dutch colonial government granted the Chitty (a distinctive Tamil group also known as Indian Peranakans) community a piece of land in the heart of Malacca for the purpose of setting up a Hindu temple. The land was located on Goldsmith Street, now known as Jalan Tokong.
