Thailand: Royal waiting room, Hua Hin Railway Station, Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province

Billed by the locals, and with reason, as ‘Thailand’s most beautiful train station’, this wooden building was once a royal pavilion at the Sanamchan Palace in Nakhon Pathom province. It was moved to Hua Hin and restructured as a railway station in 1968. In fact the station overflows with a period charm, from the red-and-white tiled platform, through the gleaming, retired steam locomotive permanently on display opposite the platform, to the pink-curtained waiting room. But the centerpiece has to be the pink, yellow and white multi-eaves sala that serves as the main station building. More temple adjunct than station, the entire ensemble exudes a seductive charm.
