Japan: The two 'river princesses', wives of the Chinese Emperor Shun (notionally 2294-2184 BCE), who drowned themselves in the Xiang River after the death of their husband. Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868), c. 1828

Yashima Gakutei was a Japanese artist and poet who was a pupil of both Totoya Hokkei and Hokusai. Gakutei is best known for his kyoka poetry and surimono woodblock works.
