China: 'Su Wu Tending Sheep'.  Qing Dynasty painter Huang Shen (1687-1772)

Su Wu was a Chinese diplomat and statesman of the Han Dynasty. He is known in Chinese history for making a mission to Central Asia, where he was seized and held captive by the nomads.

According to Chinese tradition, Su Wu endured long years of servitude herding sheep, before managing eventually to return home to China.
