India / Denmark: 'A view of the Danish colony of Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) with the Dansborg Fortress in Southeast India', watercolour, anonymous, c. 1658, Skoloster Slott, Sweden

A view of Tranquebar, Trankebar in Danish, now Tharangambadi in Tamil Nadu.

The painting is executed after the restoration of the fortress by Eskil Andersen Kongsbakke in 1657-1658. Kongsbakke later built a wall around the town in 1660 which is not shown in the painting. The letters in the town quarters represent A: customs warehouse, B: the southern part with the house of Kongsbakke, E: the Portuguese church, H: the pagoda, I: mosques. In the left and right corner of the canvas are figures dressed in various costumes.

The painting was taken as war booty by Carl Gustaf Wrangel during the war between Sweden and Denmark, possibly from Frederiksborg Castle in 1660, and is today held at Skoloster Slott (Skoloster Castle) in Sweden.
