Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple, built in 1781, is the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia and one of the oldest functioning Hindu temples in Maritime Southeast Asia.<br/><br/>In the 1780s the Dutch colonial government granted the Chitty (a distinctive Tamil group also known as Indian Peranakans) community a piece of land in the heart of Malacca for the purpose of setting up a Hindu temple. The land was located on Goldsmith Street, now known as Jalan Tokong.
