He agreed to a treaty of annexation for Hawaii but it failed in the Senate because petitions from the islands indicated lack of popular support and would be in violation of international law. A joint resolution was written by Congressman Francis G. Newlands to annex Hawaii in violation of Hawaii's Sovereign Rights. McKinley signed the Newlands Resolution which illegally annexed Hawaii on July 7, 1898 to become the Territory of Hawaii.<br/><br/> On February 22, 1900 the Hawaiian Organic Act established a territorial government with Sanford Dole, the former President of the Republic of Hawaii, appointed governor by the US President. The territorial legislature convened for the first time on February 20, 1901. Some Hawaiian people formed the Hawaiian Independent Party, under the leadership of Robert Wilcox, the first congressional delegate from Hawaii.<br/><br/> The overthrow of the kingdom and the subsequent annexation has been called the first major instance of American imperialism.
Ye Wanyong (1858-1926) was a Korean statesman who served as the last Prime Minister of the Korean Empire. He became infamous and nationally reviled for signing various treaties that turned Korea into a Japanese colony, primarily the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty of 1910.
A permanent Russian presence in Khwarezm began in 1848 with the building of Fort Aralsk at the mouth of the Syr Darya. The Empire's military superiority was such that Khiva and the other Central Asian principalities, Bukhara and Kokand, had no chance of repelling the Russian advance, despite years of fighting.<br/><br/> Khiva was gradually reduced in size by Russian expansion in Turkestan and, in 1873, after Russia conquered the neighbouring cities of Tashkent and Samarkand, General Von Kaufman launched an attack on Khiva consisting of 13,000 infantry and cavalry. The city of Khiva fell on 28 May 1873 and, on 12 August 1873, a peace treaty was signed that established Khiva as a quasi-independent Russian protectorate.

Hwang is portrayed wearing a Confucian scholar's overcoat (simeui) and a tiered black horsehair hat, sitting on a decorative mat and holding a book and a fan in his hands.
