Diu town was historically part of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat and an important port on the trade routes of the Arabian sea and Indian Ocean.<br/><br/> In 1535 Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, concluded a defensive alliance with the Portuguese against the Mughal emperor Humayun, and allowed the Portuguese to construct the Diu Fort and maintain a garrison on the island.<br/><br/> The alliance quickly unraveled, and attempts by the Sultans to oust the Portuguese from Diu between 1537 and 1546 failed. Having repented of his generosity, Bahadur Shah sought to recover Diu, but was defeated and killed by the Portuguese, followed by a period of war between them and the people of Gujarat.<br/><br/> From the 18th century, Diu declined in strategic importance, due to the development of Bombay.<br/><br/> Diu remained in the possession of the Portuguese from 1535 until 1961, when it fell to troops of the Indian Union, which invaded all of former Portuguese India under Operation Vijay.
Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi province, and a sub-provincial city in the People's Republic of China. One of the oldest cities in China, with more than 3,100 years of history, the city was known as Chang'an before the Ming Dynasty.<br/><br/>Xi'an is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, having held that position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, and Tang.<br/><br/>Xi'an is the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army.
Qixing Gongyuan or Seven Star Park gained its name from the position of its seven hills, which suggest the pattern of the Plough (Big Dipper) constellation. The park has been a tourist attraction for more than 1,000 years.<br/><br/> The name Guilin means ‘Cassia Woods’ and is named after the osmanthus (cassia) blossoms that bloom throughout the autumn period.<br/><br/> Guilin is the scene of China’s most famous landscapes, inspiring thousands of paintings over many centuries. The ‘finest mountains and rivers under heaven’ are so inspiring that poets, artists and tourists have made this China’s number one natural attraction.
In the narrow mountain valleys of Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau provinces of North Vietnam the Tai remain a very noticeable and confident minority. They are divided into White Tai and Black Tai communities, while further south, by the Lao frontier in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An Provinces, Red Tai predominate.
