Tharangambadi, formerly Tranquebar, is a town in the Nagapattinam district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It lies 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of Karaikal, near the mouth of a distributary of the Kaveri River.<br/><br/> It was a Danish colony from 1620 to 1845, and in Danish it is still known as Trankebar.

Kongsbakke later built a wall around the town in 1660 which is not shown in the painting. The letters in the town quarters represent A: customs warehouse, B: the southern part with the house of Kongsbakke, E: the Portuguese church, H: the pagoda, I: mosques. In the left and right corner of the canvas are figures dressed in various costumes.<br/><br/> The painting was taken as war booty by Carl Gustaf Wrangel during the war between Sweden and Denmark, possibly from Frederiksborg Castle in 1660, and is today held at Skoloster Slott (Skoloster Castle) in Sweden.
